Fireworks Safety

Safety First

Fireworks are explosive devices and must be handled with extreme care. Always follow all safety guidelines and local laws. Never allow children to handle fireworks unsupervised.

General Safety Rules

  • Always read and follow the instructions on each firework.
  • Never allow children under 12 to use fireworks, even sparklers, without direct adult supervision.
  • Never hold a lit firework in your hand.
  • Light one firework at a time and move back quickly to a safe distance.
  • Never re-light a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes then soak it in water before disposal.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person or animal.
  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby at all times.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them in metal or glass containers.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors, away from structures, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Storage & Handling

Proper Storage

  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from heat sources and open flames.
  • Keep fireworks in their original packaging until ready to use.
  • Store away from children and pets at all times.
  • Do not store large quantities of fireworks indoors.

Handling Tips

  • Inspect fireworks before use — do not use damaged or wet fireworks.
  • Keep fireworks away from your face and body when lighting.
  • Use a punk or long-handled lighter to ignite — never use a short lighter or match that puts your hand too close.
  • After use, soak spent fireworks in water for several hours before placing in trash.

Setup & Launch Area

Choosing the right location is critical to a safe fireworks display. Follow these guidelines when setting up your show:

  • Use a large, open outdoor area away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • Maintain a safety perimeter — keep spectators at least 70 feet back from launching area for consumer fireworks.
  • Set up on a hard, level surface (concrete, asphalt, or packed dirt).
  • Never set up near dry grass, leaves, or other flammable materials.
  • Have a fire extinguisher and water supply within easy reach.
  • Designate one person as the shooter — do not have multiple people lighting fireworks at once.

Mortars & Shell Kits

Advanced Products

Mortar shells and reloadable shell kits require extra care. Improper use can cause serious injury. Read all instructions carefully before use.
  • Always use the mortar tube that came with your shells — never substitute containers.
  • Place the mortar tube in sand or dirt to prevent tipping — never hold in your hand.
  • Drop the shell in with the fuse up, light quickly, and step back immediately.
  • Never look down the tube at any time.
  • If a shell does not fire, wait 20 minutes before approaching. Then flood the tube with water.

In Case of Emergency

If a fireworks-related injury or fire occurs, act quickly:

  • Burns: Cool the burn with cool (not cold) running water for 10–20 minutes. Do not use ice, butter, or toothpaste. Seek medical attention immediately for any significant burn.
  • Eye injuries: Do not rub the eye. Cover loosely and seek emergency medical care immediately.
  • Fire: Call 911 immediately. Use your fire extinguisher or water supply only if the fire is small and contained.

Emergency: Call 911
